The HELP-AD project presented by LEO director Prof. Fabio Biscarini has been awarded ~1.9 million FIS3 Advanced Grant (Fondo Italiano per la Scienza).

The project (Sensori elettronici organici gerarchici per la fenotipizzazione dell’Alzheimer e delle malattie infiammatorie, HELP-AD), which will be carried out at the Life Science Department of UNIMORE, tackles a highly complex clinical challenge: the correlation between Alzheimer’s disease and inflammatory cerebral angiopathies. Born from a synergy between the research groups of Prof. Fabio Biscarini, Prof. Giovanna Zamboni, and Prof. Carlo Salvarani, the project focuses on developing advanced electorlyte-gated organic transistors (EGOTs) to detect blood-borne antibodies linked to the beta-amyloid protein.

The core challenge involves synthesizing beta-amyloid peptide oligomers and integrating them into an organic transistor matrix to achieve unprecedented sensitivity and selectivity. This innovation leverages advanced organic materials, neuromorphic sensors capable of pattern recognition, and Artificial Intelligence for data analysis.
